Practicing yoga can improve sleep problems associated with menopause

Although menopause is the time when menstruation stops, the transition can take several years (perimenopause).

During perimenopause, fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels can cause a large number of symptoms such as hot flashes and insomnia.

Currently, hormone therapy is the main treatment to alleviate these symptoms, but due to the possible side effects that this type of therapy can cause, many women opt for other types of "more natural" therapies.

Now a study, published in the journal Menopause, shows that practicing yoga regularly can improve the quality of sleep for menopausal women, although it does not appear to reduce hot flashes.

In the study, 249 healthy women were randomly assigned to practice yoga, do a moderate aerobic exercise program, or do no exercise at all.

The results showed that those women who had practiced yoga for at least 12 weeks showed improvements in sleep quality and also had fewer problems with insomnia and depression.

However, in this study, yoga practice was not associated with a reduction in hot flashes or night sweats.
