Blinds can be considered a mix between curtains and blinds. Before choosing one, you must be very clear about the decorative intention and the functional application of the blind.
It glides on the glass providing a screen that filters the light. The most suitable fabrics for this type of blinds are cotton and linen.
Smooth pleated blind
A variant of the roller blind is the smooth pleated one, it is as simple to make and install as the previous one; but it is a little more showy and elegant. The pleated model is made with cards that are sewn at 30 cm intervals. The paneling requires firm fabrics and a good weft so as not to form folds or deformations. This type of blinds admits simple patterns such as squares or stripes.
Another model of blinds that is a mix between the Venetian and Baroque blinds and the pleated blind. It is a more or less smooth blind without a rigid frame, which produces a slight wave fall when it is collected.
Blinds usually fit quite well to the size of the windows. In general, leaving 5 cm of margin on the sides of the window and between 5 and 10 cm more in height. The blind support is placed as close as possible to the upper edge of the window, taking into account that the fully retracted blind can fully open the window. The length of the blind is usually about 10 cm longer than the window, as long as there are no obstacles underneath to prevent it. The final amount of fabric needed will be about 10 cm wider and about 20 cm longer than when the blind is finished.
For the board blinds, you will also need a colored ribbon or gallon, 1 cm plastic rings and 3 or 4 mm diameter metal rods cut to the width of the fabric. All these elements will be in colors that match the fabric.
Wave blinds have the same accessories, except for the rods. To install a blind and its operation, some additional accessories are needed, such as rails to gather or roll the blind. The function of the rails is completed by the cords that connect the blind to the mechanism. The blind will be folded over the rail with velcro straps; the rings sewn to the fabric allow the blinds to be gathered or folded; and the metal rods form the skeleton of the folding plank blinds.
To make a wave blind you will have to cut a piece of fabric the same width as the hanging rail, in addition to adding 5 cm for the side hems and about 30 cm longer than the maximum height desired. Then cut the side hems and a 5 cm drawstring at the top, sew a velcro tape over the bottom drawstring. About 10 cm from the side edges, sew retort ribbons on the wrong side of the fabric. Start at the edge of the bottom hem and sew a plastic ring over the ribbons at 10 cm intervals until reaching the top. Once the blind is made, you only need to place the cords and fold over the velcro of the support bar.
Smooth plank blind
For this type of blind, the same measurements are used for the fabric, the support bar, the rings, the velcro and the cord. Sew the top and side hems as indicated in the previous model. At the bottom, you can opt for a trim finish or for a completely smooth finish.
In the case of wanting an ornament, cut the length of it in the total length of the blind. You will also need to decide on the size of the pleats, as these will depend in part on the dimensions of the window. It is advisable that the width of the folded fold is not less than 10 cm or more than 15 cm. To do this, divide the total width of the blind by twice the width chosen for the fold; In the event that the division is not exact, increase or decrease the measure of the fold until you get a whole number.
Measure from the upper edge of the blind and mark with chalk, on the wrong side, the dividing lines of the folds. Follow these lines, sew a strap of the minimum width for the rods to enter and sew the rings.
In the case of a Venetian blind, it is made at the top just like a curtain, so you have to take into account the rules for measuring and calculating the amount of fabric referring to the curtain. Slight variations can be produced for the length of the blind depending on whether you want a classic Venetian blind or a simpler version.
For the production, start by sewing the side hems and basting the upper and lower folds. Then put on the gathering tape and sew the top fold. In the same way, proceed with the lower edge. Next, divide the width of the blind into vertical bands of the same width and draw the dividing lines on the reverse with a soap.
Then apply a gathering tape over each line, with a gathering seam, from the edge of the bottom hem until it meets the headboard gathering tape. Adjust all gathers and tie off all threads well. To conclude, apply rings on the ribbons at regular intervals and pass the cords through the rings.
