Tie is when 2 players have completed the hole with the same number of strokes; or when 2 teams have made the same number of strokes.

Many tournaments do not allow a tie and resort to playing more holes to break it up and have a clear winner.

Tie in English it's called All Square. So either term can be used on a golf course.
