How to choose colors for the home

Before deciding the colors for our home, we must take into account a few basic rules that will help us get it right. This is why it is so important to take time when choosing the colors for each room in the house, according to the activities that we will carry out in each one.

According to decoration experts, the colors warm (reds, yellows, oranges ...) zoom in and the colors cold (blue, purple, green ...) move away. This means that the walls of a room should be painted in cold colors if we want it to appear larger, and warm if we want it to appear smaller. However, you have to be very careful with the tones. That is, a strong blue or green can bring the walls as close to you as the warmer red, while a soft yellow can make the walls appear to dissolve, increasing the sense of space. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the tone (light or dark) and the intensity of the chosen color. In general, light, pale or less intense colors will enlarge the space, while dark or more intense ones will shrink it.

It is also important to think of a successful color combination. Colors that are in directly opposite positions on the color wheel, that is, complementary, intensify each other. For example, if we use red and green in a room, the red will appear redder and the green more green.

As for how to choose colors for a corridor, we can take into account that the corridor will seem longer if the back wall is painted in a light color and the sides in dark colors, and vice versa.

Furniture that stands out from the color of the walls (for example, a blue wall with white furniture) also helps to define the space precisely. If we want more harmony, an intense golden yellow combines perfectly with golden accessories, painted furniture and white carpentry and upholstery, expanding the feeling of space, despite being a strong and warm color. If we have a red sofa, we can choose its complement (green) for the nearest wall, so that both colors intensify each other, drawing attention. For the other walls it would be advisable then a light color that combines with other furniture or some element of the room in question.

If we want to give a little life to a small room without great interest, we can opt for a multicolored palette to change the proportions. As a general rule, choose a warm or intense color for the walls that we want to bring closer and a cold or subdued one for those that we want to move away.

Choose colors for studios or houses with very open spaces.

In traditional houses, partitions, columns and walls offer natural limits. But in other types of housing such as studios, attics, etc. With open and combined spaces, the choice of colors is a bit more complicated, because several units coexist in the same space.

First of all, you have to choose colors that blend into the furniture and other accessories. And choose accessories (for example carpets, curtains ...) that contain three or four compatible colors. You have to choose warm and cold colors within the same range of tones. And when determining where to put each color, we can think of creating a sensation of movement through successive spaces by ordering, for example, the colors from warm to cold or vice versa.
