Researchers from College of Physics Science and Technology, the Chinese University of Petroleum, in Dongying (Shandong province) and the Rowland Institute from Harvard University, have demonstrated a novel method to produce composite nanowires with a core and cladding, using carbon nanotubes that self-wind on copper nanowires by means of force field-based molecular dynamics simulations. According to the innovation, when the wide-diameter carbon nanotubes are placed next to the copper nanotubes, they approach them, fold and self-wind on the copper nanotubes, giving rise to coaxial composite nanotubes with a core and cladding. Van der Waals forces have been shown to play an important role in the formation of composite nanowires.

The expected result of this novel method is to determine various strategies to produce composite nanowires. Coaxial composite core and clad nanowires represent an important class of nanoscale building units with considerable potential for the study of new concepts and functional materials.
